Cracks, cavities and fungus at the base
A split running up the trunk, a hollow cavity you can see into, or mushrooms and fungus growing at the base are all signs of internal decay. Trees can look healthy in the canopy while the trunk is rotting from the inside, this is one of the harder problems to spot without a proper inspection.
Roots lifting the ground or paving
If you’re noticing the soil or paving around the base starting to lift or crack, it can mean the root system is shifting, sometimes because the tree is becoming unstable. It’s worth having this checked, particularly if the tree is near a driveway, wall or the house itself.
Storm damage
A tree that’s lost a major limb, been split by wind, or is now leaning after a storm needs to be assessed even if it still looks mostly fine. Storm-damaged trees can fail without further warning, so this isn’t something to leave and monitor.
It’s simply grown too close to something important
Not every removal is about a sick or dangerous tree. Sometimes a tree has just outgrown its spot, pushing into power lines, overhanging a roof, or lifting a boundary wall. In these cases removal is about prevention rather than an emergency.
